Resolution Revolution

A sense of resolve to eat and cook more healthily was the focus of my last post. But many also seem to begin a new year not just resolving to better themselves in body and mind, but also by doing more to help their fellow man, to Change the World, one resolution at a time. Continue reading →

A Sense of Resolve

IMG_2962
The new year always brings with it a fresh start, the chance to turn over a new leaf and banish bad habits, or at least have a stab a resolving to. For many, these resolutions might involve food: to eat more healthily, to cook more, to eat more fruit and veg. But whilst for those of us with families these ideals may be all the more important, they can also seem more unrealistic, when you’re time pressed, to forgo the most convenient option. It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…

So here we are again. It’s Christmas! Every year, all the old familiar traditions come back out of the bag, and boy, isn’t it just marvellous. Many of those traditions fortunately seem focus on food, and the preparations for the feasting can often start some weeks in advance. Continue reading →

Bonfire Bundt

The autumnal nights are drawing in and the time is nigh for cosying up by the fire under a blanket with our nearest and dearest. There is little better to accompany such (in)activity than this toffee apple infused cake. Its gently spicey, toffee-sweet and deeply appley flavour conjours up images of rosey cheeks around a bonfire, ooh-ing and aah-ing over fireworks and generally having a seasonally jolly time.

This cake however, isn’t one with which Guy Fawkes would have been familiar. It is traditionally Syrian in origin Continue reading →

Spooky Snacktastic

IMG_2851

Pumpkin seeds are a wondrous thing, and using the ones from your freshly carved beauty has the added benefit of making you feel thriftily virtuous. They require no more than separating from the flesh popping in a roasting tin and drizzling with oil- rapeseed, olive, whatever you have to hand. Then roast at 180C for around 20 mins. I was completely paranoid about them catching so checked them every 5, feel free to do the same! They are delicious plain, but you may wish to sprinkle with salt and chilli flakes for a savoury snack, or perhaps with cinnamon and mixed with cranberries for a sweeter one.

A little spooky montage for you

DIY Meals

I love to cook, but increasingly, with the craziness of child-rearing and all that it entails, I find myself looking for shortcuts and easy options in trying to ensure a delicious and nutritious home-cooked meal enjoyable for all without me losing my mind in the process. Continue reading →

Slow Down and Dirty Mexicano

As you may be aware my love for my slow cooker runs deep. And this love is never deeper than when it’s spent its day encasing a beautiful piece of beef brisket, gently cosseting it till meltingly tender. And when I’ve had nothing more to do with it than bunging a few bits and bobs in and reaping the benefits. Continue reading →

Tagine

Tagine A Moroccan classic, the Tagine, slow cooked, aromatic and delicious and just like all the best dishes, can be easily adapted, sacrificing a little authenticity, to whatever ingredients you fancy using or happen to have in.

I think any combination of meat/vegetables and dried fruit would  Continue reading →

All Hail the Slow Cooker, Cooker of Dreams

Slow cooker
I have a longstanding and amorous relationship with my slow cooker, it really is bloody brilliant.  There’s nothing like coming home to a house full of heady scents you haven’t been slaving over, Continue reading →

Early Morning Oats

IMG_0913
Life with a toddler and a preschooler can be a rather busy affair. With seemingly less and less time to cook and eat food let alone blog about it! Breakfast is the time for fuelling up,   Continue reading →
